This organ presents a slight elevation upon the basilar membrane,and appears to be a modification of the lining epithelium following thespiral turns of the membrane throughout its course, whence it wasformerly called the papilla spiralis acoustica. Microscopic examinationdemonstrates that it consists of a peculiar arrangement of cells which beara remarkable similarity to the key-board of a piano-forte.
