The immediate effect of thisconcession to ]3ublic opinion was toproduce so many more recruits forthe regular army that their market price fell from £40 to £30. Until the middle of the last century the ranks of the armywere almost exclusively filled by Englishmen and Lowland the seven years war Clhatham threw open the career ofarms to the Highlanders, Avho eagerly embraced it; but it wasnot until 1800 that Irishmen were admitted into the armywithout forfeiting their creed or nationality.
