Chap. VII.] CURIOUS IDOL OF LEAD. 337. Nos. 224, 225. Remarkable object of Diorite, perhaps an Idol. (Nearly 2 : 3 actual size Nos. 224, 225 are the front and back viewsof a very curious, heavy object of diorite, having in the centre a groove; it has fiveglobular projections, around one of which arefour incised lines. Can this be an idol, andcan the incised lines be intended to indicatenecklaces ? I now pass to the description of the veryremarkable figure No. 226, which is of lead, and was found in the burnt city at a depthof 23 ft. Professor Chandler Eoberts, who,at my request, cut a minute fragment fromthe base of this figure to analyse it, kindlygave me the following note on the subject:—The minute fragment of metal (weighing00352 gramme) proved, on analysis, to belead. It was submitted to cupellation, but notrace of silver could be detected by the micro-scope. The amount of metal examined was, however, too small to render the detection ofsilver probable. To what lucky accident the preservationof this lead figure is due,
