Wildland Fire Spread by Radiation—A Model Including Fuel Cooling by Natural Convection When veteran firefighters talk about the worst forest fires they have faced, when rookie firefighters are warned about dangerous situations they may encounter, and when fire researchers describe the most challenging problems they must solve, crown fires are at the top of all three lists. Crown fires involve the active burning of the upper portion, or crown, of forest vegetation. No matter what species is burning, crown fires are intense and fed by the most volatile part of the plants involved. Forest Service fire scientists have made remarkable progress in developing computer models that predict the behavior of wildfires. These model predictions are used onsite by fire managers to employ their resources in the most efficient ways. But today's operational fire-behavior models are not capable of accurately predicting. 0 1 2 3 4 5 Schematic diagram of a computer simulation showing the relationship between heat generated by a fire (vertical axis) and the degree to which trees in advance of the fire front are nearing ignition, over distance (horizontal axis). 60.
