The instrument showing the grade which could be climbed atthe speed indicated is controlled by the same cables showing thetractive effort on the chart and consists of a pointer fulcrumedat one end and operated from the horizontal cross piece by aclamp which can be set at the proper weight for the car and itsoccupants. This scale is laid off proportionally to the sine ofthe angle of the grade, which equals the tractive effort in poundsdivided by the weight of the car in pounds, both to the samescale.
