Ordinarily, it would be no easy task to reconcile and bringtogether such a variety of interests in a matter in itself difficultand perplexed; but the efforts of the government, in attemptingto accomplish this desirable object, have been seconded andsustained by a spirit of accommodation and conciliation on the Lord Ashburto n From the Painting by G. Connected with the settlement of the line of the northeasternboundary, so far as it respects the States of Maine and Massa-chusetts, is the continuation of that line along the Highlands tothe north westernmost head of Connecticut River. Which ofthe sources of that stream is entitled to this character has beenmatter of controversy, and is of some interest to the State ofNew Hampshire. The King of the Netherlands decided Ihemain branch to be the northwesternmost head of the Connecti-cut This did not satisfy the claim of New Hampshire. Theline agreed to in the present treaty follows the Highlands to thehead of Halls Stieam, and thence down that river, embracingthe whole claim of New Hampshire, and establishing her titleto one hundred thousand acres of territory more than she wouldhave had by the decision of the King of the
