DeaconThomas G. Clarke, father of Andrew T. J., wasborn in Franklin, Conn., June 16, 1809. He beganteaching school at the age of sixteen years andcontinued to be engaged in pedagogic work duringthe winter months until he had attained his legalmajority, when he prepared for entrance to thetheological seminary at East Windsor, Conn., wherehe was graduated. He thereafter was engaged inthe active work of the ministry until his healthmaterially failed, and he then came to Canterbury,where he turned his attention to farming.
