Giant tortoise behinds at the Charles Darwin Research Station, The Galapagos Islands

Three tortoises in an enclosure at the Charles Darwin Research Station in Puerto Ayora, Santa Cruz Island, The Galapagos Islands. At the research station, tortoises are bred and reared and when the tortoises are large enough they are put into outside enclosures. After 3-4 years, most tortoises will be released back to the island which their sub-species belongs too (each island has its own unique sub-species of tortoise). This image is of 3 rescued tortoises of unknown origin. They are not going to be released as it is not known what island they come from. Image taken in 2001
