An old engraving of men digging a well by hand in the 1800s. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. Two men are walking in a circle turning a boring tool contained within an iron cylinder or rod. Above them the boring rods are suspended from a pivoted, wooden beam, which a worker raises and lets down in a pounding motion, assisting the drilling. Using a variety of bits on the tool (augers, cutters, hole-cleaners, claws and others), and by adding new sections to the cylinder, the well would become deep enough to tap into an underground, artesian water supply.
