Schizophrenia. Illustration of the limbic system in a human brain - the area thought to be damaged in schizophrenia - surrounded by images of despair and madness by famous artists. In the top left is Despair by Michelangelo, in which a tormented soul is dragged to hell by demons. At lower left is The Scream by Munch. In the top right are two pictures of a cat by the schizophrenic artist Louis Wain, whose work grew increasingly abstract as his illness progressed. At lower right is a nerve cell synapse with neurotransmitters (red dots). Schizophrenia is a common psychotic illness that causes paranoid delusions, perception of inner voices, depression and personality change.
