Naval Reserve Force, November 7, 1917, and was releasedfrom active service on April 5, 1919. He served three monthson shore duty and fourteen months at sea, stationed two monthsat Cape May, N. J.; two weeks at Philadelphia, and two weeksat Bay Ridge Barracks, Brooklyn. He served on the U. S. , a converted yacht, for ten months, doing convoy dutyand submarine control. He saw action with U-boats during theirraids on the Atlantic coast during the summer of 1918. LaterSailor Rochford was transferred to the U. S. S. E. L. DohenyIII, which carried oil from Texas and Mexico to Italy, Austriaand other ports on the Mediterranean Sea. After four monthson the Doheny he was transferred to Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Hereturned home uninjured. 121
