. The Exempt firemen of San Francisco; their unique and gallant record. J J. MCCARTHY J. J. McCarthy was born in Boston,Mass., November 12, 1854, and came toCalifornia in 1857. He joined the De-partment in June, 1879, was promotedto lieutenant of Engine No. 32 and isnow on the waiting JAMES J. BYRNE James J. Byrne, born in New YorkOctober 7, 1849, came to San Francisco in1863. When only a boy,he ran with Man-hattan Engine No. 2, remaining with thatcompany until it disbanded, and followinghis trade as a plummer, which position henow occupies in the Fire Department. ?^
