Bass Rock Scotland from North Berwick

Bass Rock, a rugged volcanic island in the Firth of Forth, Scotland, has a rich history. It served as a medieval hermitage and later as a fortress. In the 17th century, it became a notorious prison for Covenanters, Scottish Presbyterian rebels. It’s famous for its gannet colonies, which have drawn naturalists for centuries. In the 19th century, a lighthouse was built on the rock. During World War I, it served as a military outpost. Today, it’s a seabird sanctuary and a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest. Bass Rock’s historical and ecological significance continues to captivate visitors.
