Illustration of the possible layout of the quarks in a pentaquark particle. Petaquark particles are a composite quark state different from the normal composition of matter. Their existence was confirmed by the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory. There are two possible structures. The structure shown here consists of a meson (left, one quark and one anti-quark) and a baryon (right, three quarks). The meson and baryon are weakly bonded together. An alternative structure is where the five quarks are tightly bonded (see image C026/8044). These results were reported in July 2015.
