This is the memorial to Ruswarp the Border Collie at Garsdale Railway Station in the Cumbrian Dales, on the famous Settle to Carlisle Line. The story goes like this. The Settle-Carlisle line one of the Worlds Great Rail Journey's came close to closure in the 1980's. In response 32,000 people and one fare paying dog objected. The dog was Ruswarp [russup] a Border Collie owned by Graham Nuttall a co-founder of the Friends of Settle-Carlisle Line. After years of campaigning the line was reprieved in 1989 and due to its popularity its capacity has doubled. Graham Nuttall [41] and Ruswarp [14] were avid walkers and inseparable companions. On 20 January 1990 they went walking in the hills and didn't return. Grahams body was found on the 7 April. His faithful dog Ruswarp stayed with him for those long 11 winter weeks. Ruswarp emancipated was honoured Nationally and by the RSPCA living just long enough to attend Graham's 2009 bronze statue of Ruswarp on the southbound platform at Garsdale station looks towards the Cumbrian Fells and to the bench on the far side dedicated to his master Graham Nuttall. Garsdale was said to be their favourite place. Thanks to FoSCL for the added information.
