View of the Palmaria Island in the Gulf of Poets with a typical mussel farm on the shore, La Spezia, Liguria, Italy

The activity linked to mussel farming dates back to the end of the nineteenth century, when the first mussel farms settled in the Gulf of La Spezia. The mussels are bred in the Gulf of La Spezia, in the sea of Lerici, in the sea of Portovenere and in the sea of Palmaria Island. The morphology and favorable environmental conditions (especially the lack of tides), the depth of the seabed and the groundwater streams of fresh water create the optimal conditions for the growth and development of mussels. The mussels are bred in nurseries consisting of galvanized iron poles planted on the bottom or floating connected to each other by nylon ropes, stretched below the level of the wave, which are knotted so-called "pergolas" or "reste" on which the mussels grow.
