The 16th Century election of a Doge (or Duke) which took place through the vote of the members of the Great Council and Minor Council of Genoa. The voting took place by drawing fifty golden balls contained in an urn placed in front of the throne. The one who obtained the highest number of votes was elected Doge. The Doge was the ruler of the Republic of Genoa, a city-state and maritime republic in Italy.
