Bravo, Belgium. Punch Cartoon of 1914 Belgium defies Germany


1914 Punch cartoon Bravo, Belgium by F H Townsend (1868-1920) from the Illustrated War Record published circa 1920. Amid the escalating crisis following the assassination of the Archduke Ferdinand in June of 1914 Germany began to activate its Schlieffen Plan. Beginning with an offensive on Luxembourg and Belgium to clear a path for German troops to cross the border into France. Belgium though was maintaining a state of neutrality and refused the Germans military access to their country. An invasion of Belgium by Germany followed with the result that Great Britain then declared war on Germany.
