The cold and stormy state of the weather pre-vented our sailing upon the lakes, which wasmuch to be regretted. A circular tower, with theruins of its exterior buildings, are all that now re-main of the latter. This relic of British originwas built as early as the sixth century, and thereare still the remains of a stone staircase, the sum-mit commanding a fine view of the lakes, with thevaried and magnificent mountain scenery spring-ing from their very margin. The only historicalrecord of note which we hear of this castle is theconfinement of Owen Goch, during a term of noless than twenty years, within its walls, for incit-ing David to rebel against their brother Llewellyn,last Prince of Wales in the British line.
