Adrian le Roy, an eminent lutenist,was afterwards associated with them, and the type wasimproved. He published, about 1570, the precepts forthe tablature of the lute, an inconvenient method ofnotation, that was occasionally applied even to thediflFerent classes of the viol and violin, and did not wearitself out until a comparatively recent period.
