But apart from the questionof technique, the whole scheme of the group is not one that Lawrence wouldhave adopted, whilst the unidealized figures are not painted in his trace has been found to substantiate the Lawrence attribution; and it isquite certain that there would have been some record of a picture of this sizeand importance if Lawrence had painted it. The extreme probability is thatit is the work of Lawrences assistant, an extremely able portrait-painter, JohnSimpson, who exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1807 to 1843, who wasfor many years employed by Lawrence in painting the accessories of his pic-tures and in making copies, and whose work often comes so close to Lawrencesmanner that it has frequently been mistaken for MARBLE STATUARY TO BE SOLDAT THE AMERICAN ART GALLERIES ON WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON.
