Coast Guardsman Dodges Death. Coast Guardsman James D. Fox, of Uniontown, Pennsylvania, dodged death in a matter of minutes when he left his bunk in the Solomons just before Jap shell fire ripped this hole in his blanket. Fox, one of the Coast Guardsmen who landed the Marines in the original invasion of Guadalcanal, had salvaged the blanket from the routed Japs effects. Back home on leave, he still has the blanket and the Americans still have the island. Coast Guardsman Fox is shown here with his fingers sticking through the shell hole.
