As to the figure of Buddha on avessel so evidently meant for Christianuses, Sir George Birdwood has pointedout that, although very curious andperhaps unprecedented, it may yet beaccounted for. The intimate associationof Venice and Genoa with easterntrade had spread a general knowledgeof India throughout mercantile Italy,and the appearance of Buddha on many objects imported from the East was very familiar ;moreover, Buddha had himself been introduced into the. The holy water pail, which was used in certain parts of theservices within the church, was always made with a handle forthe purpose of carrying it about, and some of the earlier onesrecall the Scandinavian pails, to which we have already referred.
