Armthorpe in South Yorkshire, England, Uk
Armthorpe is a village and civil parish which forms the eastern edge of the Doncaster within the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England. It has a population of 12,630. After the closure of the mine 1996 the area went through deep depression. The old colliery site is now a large housing estate, with a thriving community with parks and tracks for walking and cycling to the local wood. A group of dedicated volunteers transformed a previously neglected memorial to the miners who lost their lives whilst working at the Markham Main Colliery. The garden includes a wheel bearing the names of 87 men and boys who were killed in the Markham Main Colliery and some benches which were donated by ex-mining families alongside planting including rose bushes.
