Parks activists, community members and elected officials gather for a rally at the pavilion in Union Square Park in New York

Parks activists, community members and elected officials gather for a rally at the pavilion at the north end of Union Square Park in New York on Sunday, March 9, 2014. Many community members and parks advocates oppose the commercial enterprise of a high-end seasonal restaurant in the building citing a lack of open space for children and seniors in the densely packed neighborhood. The opponents are asking New York Mayor Bill de Blasio to block the Bloomberg era plan. Besides the privatization of parkland this use of the pavilion will put a damper on free speech as the park has hosted numerous rallies and protests over the years. The activists want to continue the use of the pavilion for community activities. The building is a designated Historic National Landmark. (© Richard B. Levine)
