The theatre at Priene, Turkey. Artist: Samuel Magal

The theatre at Priene, Turkey. The theatre at Priene was built in the Hellenistic period, although some additions were made in the Roman period. It could accommodate about 5000 spectators and consisted of fifty rows of seats. Six staircases enabled spectators to reach their seats easily and the skene had three rooms and was covered with a wooden roof. Theatrical performances started with a sacrificial rite in the name of Dionysus.
