George Owen Squier (1865-1934), US inventor, in his uniform as a US Army General. Squier pioneered US Army radio technology, inventing mutiplexing in 1910. This technique made it easier to code and transmit information. He worked in the US Army Signal Corps, rising to the rank of Major General and being appointed Chief Signal Officer in World War I. He also worked in aviation, helping to establish in 1907 what would become the US Air Force. In 1908, he was the first passenger to fly in an aeroplane, and he worked with the Wright brothers to obtain aircraft for the US Army. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries. The photographs date from the 1890s to the 1930s.
