At the time of my visit, several companiesof the Force publique which are Belgian colonialtroops, were fighting Sultans Mokpoi, Linsingino, andSassa, and the authorities had forbidden the garrisonof Gangara to make excursions in the neighbour-hood, lest they should leave the station to Gangara there are only a few Akare villages,so I hastened to pay my respects to the sultan, andarrived at his residence on the 3rd of June. After keeping me waiting some time, Sultan SemioIkpiro received me in the presence of a chief and aninterpreter, and then conducted me to a spaciousguest-house in the first court of his zariba. 216. He is sixty-five years of age, and has a kindlyexpression. (Vide coloured illus.) At first he re-minded me of a self-conscious, obstinate, crafty oldpeasant, who evidently regarded me with profounddistrust. But presently he gained confidence, andbecame more communicative. When he found thatI wanted neither india-rubber nor ivory, and that Ihad no wish to elope with one of his wives, and whenI had assured him, moreover, that I should soon beproceeding on my journey, he became more cordial,and promised to supply me with some ethnologicalspecimens.
