Checkpoint Charlie at Friedrichstrasse - Berlin Wall Peter Fechter memorial 1991

Checkpoint Charlie was the name given by the Western Allies to this crossing point between East Berlin and West Berlin during the Cold War. It was located at the junction of Friedrichstraße and Zimmerstraße. Checkpoint Charlie was the crossing point (by foot or by car) for foreigners and members of the Allied forces. The name Charlie came from the letter C in the phonetic alphabet. The East Germans officially referred to Checkpoint Charlie as the Grenzübergangsstelle ("Border Crossing Point") Friedrich-/Zimmerstraße.
