James Braid (1795-1860), Scottish surgeon. Braid pioneered the development of hypnotism in the 19th century, coining the phrase and publishing several works on the topic. He moved away from the earlier occult work by the German physician Franz Mesmer, and wrote scientific and medical works. This early work by Braid and others, in Manchester, London and Paris, influenced later practitioners, especially in France.
