(See Fig. 50.) Carcinoma is of epiblastic origin, and is connected with someform of gland tissue. It is rare in young persons, and it commonlyinvolves the lymphatics at an early period of its development. Itis usually rapid in its growth, and it may cause a very great degreeof pain. Hence its location will be animportant guide in its diagnosis. Epithelioma, as its name indicates,is a degeneration of an epithelialsurface, usually of the skin, and consists of masses of epithelial cellssurrounded and separated by bands of connective tissue. It belongsto the malignant growths, though it does not necessarily assumetheir form. It is most apt to attack those beyond middle life, andis much more common in men than in women.
