Walmer Castle was built by Henry VIII in 1539–1540, originally as part of a chain of coastal artillery defences, it later evolved into the official residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, of which past Wardens have included; the Duke of Wellington, Sir Winston Churchill and HM Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother.
