Ephesus Turkey religious program Virgin Mary House. Ancient Ephesus has been inhabited since about 6000 BC. Occupied and rules by man different countries. The ruins show great cities of both Greece and Romans. The city was famed for the Temple of Artemis, the Library of Celsus, and a theater which was capable of holding 25,000 spectators. This open air theater was used for drama, but during later Roman times gladiatorial combats were also held on its stage. Ephesus was an important center for Early Christianity. Jesus instructions to Apostle John to take care of Virgin Mary after his death has lead to legend of both living in the mountains above Ephesus.
