H. MKELWAY. LINE ENGINEER BROOKLYN RAPIDTRANSIT SYSTEM There are two ways to dead-end feeders to metalpoles, either directly on to the pole through insulators,or on an arm attached to the pole. The former methodcan be considered as standard when only one feeder isto be dead-ended, but when there are several, the bestpractice calls for a wooden dead-end arm. As wood hasgood insulating qualities, it practically adds a thirdinsulator to the two which sound practice always re-quires between a live wire and the ground. It is onaccount of the omission of this dead-end arm that is representative of poor practice, or rather does not. FIG. 1—THREE FEEDERS DEAD-ENDED ON POLE represent the best practice. Fig. 2 is a photograph ofthe same point as Fig. 1 but was taken a month ortwo later after an arm had been installed. The onlyexcuse for not putting in an arm sooner at this locationwas that the feeders had been run at different times,so that the best practice was overlooked when the sec-ond and third wires were run. When there is only one feeder to stop there is noobjection to dead-ending on the pole, as the first costis less and the appearance better than if an arm wereinstalled. When two or more wires are to be dead-ended an arm should be placed on the pole, as the
