He was licensed to preach bythe University Place (now Memorial) Baptist Church, Chicago,June 25,1873. He entered upon his first pastorate at Moweaqua,111., Jxily, 1875, where he was ordained Sept. 16th of that married to Miss Melvina E. Bower, of Macon County, 111.,November 12, 1876. Received andaccepted a call tothe pastorate ofthe Park AvenueChurch, St. Louis,Dec, 1876. Jan. 27, 1877, he was calledto endure the great-est trial of his life,the death of his be-loved mother.
