Achilles statue near Hyde Park Corner, erected as a monument to the Duke of Wellington.


The 18ft high bronze statue of Achilles near Hyde Park Corner was erected in 1822 to commemorate the Duke of Wellington and his victories in the Peninsular and Napoleonic Wars. The statue was designed by Richard Westmacott and cost £10,000. The bronze came from cannons captured in the Duke's military campaigns including Waterloo.
