E. coli STEC bacterial test. Close-up of a microbiologist performing a test for several different serogroups of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC). A sample is placed on each test area on the card, followed by a drop of latex chemical agent bound to a specific antibody for that serogroup. The results are visible within a few minutes. The toxin produced by these E. coli strains is known as shiga-like toxin (verotoxin). It acts on the lining of blood vessels, causing bloody diarrhoea and potentially fatal kidney failure. This research is being carried out by the Agricultural Research Service of the US Department of Agriculture.
