Radley Village, Oxfordshire, England - 19 May 2020; no people in view. Quite one of my favourite row of trees, anywhere. And it happens to be in my home village of Lower Radley in Oxfordshire, England. It manages to look pretty just about throughout the year - and particularly here in early summer, as the leaves burst into new life. But, during the pandemic, few are here to appreciate them. This shattered tree in the line evokes a very specific memory - an immaculate line of House Guard soldiers parading in line for the queen at the trooping of the colour ceremony, but one has collapsed from heat First a large branch fell off this unhappy specimen; then, several weeks later, the whole unbalanced tree split fatally, leaving only this doomed fang of wood upright.
