Woman in the costume of Coutances. Here is a really large bavolet bonnet, with the most luxurious decoration. It is set on a ribbon of silk and gold, and the tie is a sort of belt. She is reading a tiny book, perhaps one of the almanacs or gift books for ladies so popular at the time. Hand-colored fashion plate illustration by Lante engraved by Gatine from Louis-Marie Lante's "Costumes des femmes du Pays de Caux," 1827/1885. With their tall Alsation lace hats, the women of Caux and Normandy were famous for the elegance and style.
