Whitney Carr Was born August 22, 1825, in Catnillus, Onondag-a county. New York. He passed hisearly life on his fathers farm, but, being- early thrown upon his own resources by thefailure of his father, he engaged in many activities. Whether as teacher, clerk orlaborer, hard, persistent work has characterized Mr. Carr. In his forty-ninth year he married a Miss Isabelle Thompson of New Jersey. Theyhad no children. Mrs. Carr died in 1893. Mr. Carrs school education has been very meager. Since twelve years of age he hasbeen to school but eight months. It was his intention at one time to go through OberlinCollege where he attended three months, but in his work to obtain money for this pur-pose his activities were directed into other channels. The school of life has trained and educated Mr. Carr broadly and liberally. Afterthe acquirement of considerable means through trading largely he has devoted himselfto thought and reading.
