Three 12-metre antennas and one 7-metre antenna constructed by MELCO (Mitsubishi Electric Corporation) at ALMA's Japanese assembly facility. ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array) is an array of 66 radio antennas prepared here in the Chilean Andes at an elevation of 2900 metres, and then moved to an elevation of 5000 metres on the nearby arid Chajnantor plateau. Data from the separate antennas is combined by interferometry, making it one of the most powerful telescopes in the world. Observations began in late 2011. Photograph published in May 2010.
