The confluence of the Simois and the Ancient Scamander is between Troy and the hill to the north-east of KoumKioi. The plain of the Simois is there 2 metres higher than the plain of the Scamander. In front ofthis confluence is a large dune of sand, which has been cut through by the river between Koum Kioi and theTomb of Ilu8; the depression between the plain (8-33 metres) and the hill of the Kalyvia gave a passageto the river, which then discharged itself into the bed of the In Tepeh. Between the Tumulus of IIus and thfcJbed of the In Tepeh can be seen the sand which has filled up this depression. (The numbers indicate thealtitudes in metres.) is effaced and confounded with the plain; on the opposite side it has ahigh bank.
