Torn knee cartilage. Arthroscope (endoscope) views of a tear in the meniscus cartilage of the knee. There is a medical probe in the image upper left. There are two menisci in each knee. They are crescent-shaped pieces of cartilage which reduce friction in the moving joint and increase its stability. They can sometimes be repaired by arthroscopic (minimally invasive) surgery.
