He was theson of the Kings suvintendant, as his title was: whatwould correspond, I suppose, in our time and tongue, toDirector of Works,—head gardener and outside man. Thefather was anxious to have his son become a painter, though inthose days the natural course of events was for a mans son tofollow in his fathers footsteps.
