The diseases of the ear and their treatment . Politzerisation can oftenbe performed even without swallowing, as contraction of themuscles of the soft palate is caused by the inflation itself. It canalso be done while the child is crying. Lucae1 and Gruber2 have recommended, for the purpose ofeffecting the closure of the soft palate, the phonation of vowels orof words with k (hick) instead of swallowing. According to theauthors manometrical records, the power of resistance of the softpalate in pronouncing vowel sounds is so slight that sufficientpressure cannot be obtained in the naso-pharynx.

The resistanceis more considerable when k or hick is pronounced. But, atany rate, Politzers original method is to be preferred to thesemodifications, as being more effectual. It should, however, bepointed out that there are cases in which, during the act of 1 Virchows Archiv, vol. The great advantage of Politzerisation over Catheterism lies inthe fact that it avoids the disagreeable feeling arising from theintroduction of the catheter, which sometimes renders its employ-ment impossible, especially in the case of children. Besides, it isfrequently possible to force a greater volume and a stronger currentof air into the tympanic cavity by Politzers method than by thecatheter. 3. Catheterism. The pharyngeal orifice of the Eustachian tube is situated (seeFig. 20) on the lateral wall of the pharynx, on a level with the lowerturbinated body, 1 cm. above the floor of the nasal cavity, at anaverage distance of 7|-
