Lunar eclipse seen from the Moon. This is the end of the lunar eclipse that took place on 15 June 2011. A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth passes between the Moon and the Sun, here seen from the Moon. On Earth, this can only occur during a Full Moon, and the Moon turns a reddish colour. First contact took place at 17:23 UTC, deepest shadow at 20:12 UTC, and last contact at 23:02 UTC. The image is a composite of data from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), and satellite images of the Earth at night. During the eclipse, the LRO carried out the Diviner Lunar Radiometry Experiment to measure cooling on the lunar surface.
