From December, 1805 to March, 1806, the Corps of Discovery built and occupied Fort Clatsop, where they endured rain, wind, and cold. This is a 2006 replica of the Fort. Twenty-four privates, three sergeants, Captains Lewis and Clark, Sacagawea, an Indian woman who was their interpreter, her husband Toussaint Charbonneau (a man of little merit according to Clark), their son John Baptiste, and Clark's slave York lived here. The Fort is on the banks of the Lewis and Clark River, and near the mouth of the Columbia River.
