Anaesthetising a patient. Anaesthetist inserting a cannula into the back of a patient's hand prior to surgery to remove a cancerous kidney. A cannula is a combination of a hollow needle with a tube inside. The needle enables the tube to be inserted into a patient's vein. Once inserted, the needle is removed leaving the tube in place. This allows liquid drugs to be fed directly into the patient's blood stream through the tube.
