REAR ADMIRAL ARTHUR STATES NAVY. 47 Rear Admiral ARTHUR BURTIS. United States Navy. Was born in New York, and appointed assistantpaymaster from that State by Air. Lincoln in 1862 ;his grandfather, x^rthur Bnrtis, was an Alderman ofthe City of New York from 1813 to 1819; his great-grandfather and great great-grandfather both servedin the Revolntionar}^ War. His father was the Burtis, D. D., an eminent clergyman of Buf-falo, N. Y. Young Burtis first orders were to dut}^under Admiral Farragut in the Sagamore, but on thewa} there in the supply steamer Rhode Island hecontracted yellow fever and was sent north ; upon re-covering was ordered to the Connecticut, employed inconvo3dng the California steamers through the Car-ibbean Sea; the Connecticut was next on the block-ade, capturing four noted blockade-runners; alsocaused the destruction of four more, in the course ofwhich duty she was engaged with Fort Fisher.
