On the 20th of August in juiius Caesarthe fifty-fifth year before the Christian era, Caesar lands insailed from Calais with the infantry of two legions, Britain,and, in a few hours, cast anchor before the spot now ^•^- 55-occupied by the town of Deal. The beach was gained aftera short struggle with the natives, whose untaught valour yieldedto the arms
